Facebook Page Timeline Setup Tutorial – Profile Image

Today’s Facebook Page Timeline Setup Tutorial task is s simple one: choose your profile image. Before Timeline you could make this image varying sizes, but in the new Timeline design it is limited to a square image. Choose carefully, since your profile image will represent your page throughout Facebook on the News Feed, in Ads, in comments, etc.

Dimensions

The dimensions of the Facebook Timeline profile photo is a square 125 x 125 pixels in size, but the photo you upload should be at least 180 pixels by 180 pixels. (UPDATE: On April 26th Facebook changed the dimensions of the profile photo to 160 pixels  x 160 pixels. It will be 23 pixels from the left side of the cover photo and 210 pixels from the top of the cover photo).

How to Change your Facebook Page Profile Photo

It’s very simple to change your profile image, just go to your page and roll your mouse over your profile photo. The Edit Photo options will appear, which allow you to upload a photo or choose from your existing photos. If you upload a photo that is outside of the specified dimensions, you can edit the thumbnail and choose what part of the image will display.

Ideas for Facebook Page Profile Photo

Facebook’s recommendation is to put your logo as your profile photo. In the past, I’ve always encouraged my clients to use a profile image that was more personal, instead of just a logo. For example, a photo of a customer enjoying their product or a photo of their staff.

I don’t think this has changed much with the new design. I still think it’s a good idea to use a photo that people will connect with rather than just your logo. You can always put your logo on your cover photo. For bigger brands, this may be a challenge and it may be better for you to just use your logo. But if you are a smaller business and you are able to show the human face of your company, do it!

Remember, EdgeRank is still what determines if your Facebook page updates display in the Newsfeed, and your profile photo is what identifies your page on that NewsFeed. People are more likely to communicate with other people over a logo, so having a human face to your brand is more likely to increase engagement and make sure your page updates show up more in your customers’ NewsFeed.

I believe that social media gives small businesses & nonprofits the advantage over big corporations. Social media levels the playing field and no longer gives the advantage to the company with the most money, but rather to the company that is the most transparent, engaging, and in tune with its community. I want to help your business or nonprofit stand out in the crowd and take advantage of the many benefits social marketing has to offer. I want to see your business grow, your website traffic increase, your customers become your biggest endorsers, all while reducing the costs of your marketing efforts. I believe that together we can make that happen. I’ve worked with small businesses, authors, and nonprofits – giving me a variety of experiences to draw from. I understand the technology and what drives social marketing – but most of all I love what I do. I’m confident I can help transform your company’s online presence – and ultimately its presence in your community as well. Check out
